Information Management

  • "Information Management is the ongoing organized activities undertaken by an organization to efficiently and effectively manage information throughout its life-cycle which includes the planning, collection, use, maintenance, disposal and evaluation phases."
  • It is necessary to understand your information in order to manage it.
  • Enterprise Business Architecture defines the information requirements of the business now and in the future. It defines the flow of information and can determine where information flow is ineffective or inefficient. The problems may be anywhere in the life cycle:
    • in planning for the information that will be needed
    • in collecting or otherwise acquiring the necessary information
    • in its use, including effective and efficient sharing
    • in the storage and maintenance due to ineffective data models or administration
    • Sheer volumes of information, some of which is seldom or ever used can be costing huge delays in search and retrieval
    • All of these elements of the life cycle need to be understood explicitly and evaluated against the "future view" defined in the information and business architectures
